Editor’s note: On August 10, 2019, Jeffrey Epstein died in an apparent suicide in prison. For more information, see The Daily Beast’s report here.
Lawyer Alan Dershowitz claims an email buried in a mountain of newly unsealed court documents proves one of Jeffrey Epstein’s accusers lied when she said she was fired for sex with him as a teenager.
“I have been waiting for these emails to come out for months and they conclusively prove my innocence,” Dershowitz told the Daily Beast on Friday, adding that he is now asking federal prosecutors to investigate the senior legal team. accuser’s level.
Virginia Roberts Giuffre, who claims Epstein made her a sex slave when she was only 16, also alleged that she was loaned out for sex with Dershowitz, claiming in a 2016 deposition that she had previously performed oral sex on the Harvard law professor. in a Massachusetts limousine, alongside Epstein and a young girl.
“The first time I can remember having sex with Professor Dershowitz was in New York,” she said at one point in this statement. “The last time I remember sleeping with him⦠I think it was on a plane.”
Dershowitz – who helped negotiate Epstein’s plea deal in 2007 – vehemently denied any sexual contact with Giuffre, waged a public war with his lawyer David Boies, and insisted he be cleared when the documents judicial proceedings would be unsealed.
The loosening occurred on Friday morning when a slice of files from a libel lawsuit that Giuffre had filed against Epstein’s companion, Ghislaine Maxwell, were made public.
The pile of documents contained bad news for a group of prominent men, from former New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson to New York billionaire Glenn Dubin, who were named by Giuffre as being involved in the alleged ring. of Epstein’s sex trafficking; they deny it.
But Dershowitz says one particular document also poses a problem for Giuffre: an email exchange in 2011 between her and a British tabloid reporter who interviewed her about her years under Epstein’s sway.
In the email, Giuffre told the Mail on Sunday journalist, Sharon Churcher, she was rushing to meet a deadline for a project that she would later describe as a “fictional account” of what had happened to her.
âI was just wondering if you had any information on yourself when you and I were doing interviews about JE history,â Giuffre wrote to Churcher.
âI wanted to put the names of some of the assholes, oops, I meant, pedo’s, that I sent me to. With everything going on, my brain looks like mush and that would be a big help! Giuffre added.
The emails in the court file show that Churcher replied, “Remember Alan Dershowitz⦠JE’s boyfriend and lawyer⦠good name for your pitch as he replaced Claus von Bulow and a movie was turned on this case⦠the title was Reversal of Fortune. We all have a suspicion that Alan is a pedo and while there is no proof of that, you probably met him when he was hanging out with JE.
Giuffre’s response contained no reference to Dershowitz, just a simple, “Thanks again Shazza, I’m bringing down the house with this book !!”
“Don’t forget Alan Dershowitz.“
– Journalist Sharon Churcher
Churcher, who no longer works at Mail on Sunday, declined to comment.
Dershowitz noted that when Giuffre finished his manuscript there was no mention of sexual relations with him, although Giuffre wrote that Dershowitz had a taste for young and beautiful women and that he once entered a room where Epstein had just assaulted him.
Court documents filed by Giuffre’s legal team indicate that she began writing the manuscript on the advice of her mental health counselor in order to overcome her trauma. She explored the idea of ââselling it but ultimately decided not to publish it, they said.
For Dershowitz, desperately trying to save his reputation as the Epstein scandal continues to escalate, the absence of allegations, even in what Giuffre described as fiction, amounts to a smoking gun.
âIf she had sex with me, I would be highlighted,â he said.
âIt’s completely exculpatory and totally consistent with what I said,â Dershowitz said. “She made it up when she met her lawyers and heard that there was a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow.”
Asked about Dershowitz’s claim that the email shows Giuffre had not accused her of sexual misconduct before she filed a complaint, Boies’ firm sent a statement from her co-counsel, Sigrid McCawley, who did not directly address the problem.
“The denials of those accused of participating in Jeffrey Epstein’s horrific sex trafficking operation are predictable.“
– Sigrid McCawley, lawyer for Epstein’s accuser
“Denials by those accused of participating in Jeffrey Epstein’s horrific sex trafficking operation are predictable and long overdue,” McCawley said. âThe truth will have the last word. “
He continued, âThe body of evidence amassed in the case against Ghislaine Maxwell – Jeffrey Epstein’s chief recruiter, trainer and sometimes co-abuser – is powerful. A part was unsealed by the Second Circuit; we hope more will come out.
âDocuments and exhibits must be carefully examined for the vivid, detailed and tragic story they tell in the face of superficial and sticky statements by the accused. Virginia Roberts Giuffre is a survivor and a woman to be believed. She thinks a calculation of inevitable liability has begun. “
Dershowitz, who is being sued by Giuffre for libel, said when he was first charged he went to federal prosecutors and complained, but was unable to provide them with the chain of mail. Churcher electronics because it had already been sealed by the court.
Now that the document is public, he said, his lawyers plan to speak with prosecutors on Monday and ask them to investigate Giuffre’s lawyers for “pressuring her into me. falsely accuses “.
Dershowitz also said he was unsure if Giuffre was telling the truth when she claimed that her former client recruited underage girls for sex with her famous friends, like Prince Andrew and model agent Jean- Luc Brunel.
âI just know she made up stories about me,â he said.
