Letter from the editor: Want to write a book? I submitted my manuscript and if I can do it, you can too | Letter from the editor

Almost four years ago, I finally started writing the book that had marinated in my head for years before I finally put pen to paper (or fingers to keyboard). Over the years, the book has taken many forms, approaches and titles. I shared my ideas with very few people, but each marked my thinking.

A book-writing workshop at my alma mater, UW-Madison, was a turning point for me. The moment when the book really started to crystallize.

The process of signing with an amazing literary agent and then landing a book deal with an inspiring publisher made it all the more real.

But, the actual writing of the book was so much harder than I ever imagined. As a journalist, I thought writing a book would just be a longer form of expression that I could easily adapt to because I love writing.

It turned out that writing this book forced me to open up in a way that I had never done before. I had to dig so deep and examine my childhood in a really intense and, at times, quite uncomfortable way.

But, without being vulnerable and sharing the heart of what makes you, I learned that you can’t really have an impact. To write something meaningful, you have to “go for it”.

Last week I submitted the manuscript for “Become the Fire: Transform Your Chaos Into Career and Life Success”. In her, I share the vulnerable, the heart. Lots of chaos.

That’s not all I’ve experienced, far from it. But that’s a lot of what made me. And, a lot of what allowed me to go from being burned by fire, to becoming fire.

But it’s not just my story. In the book, I also share the stories of 10 other women who have walked through the fire and come out stronger. They too turned their chaos into success. They too have become fire. I am grateful to these diverse and dynamic women for sharing their stories, so others can learn from their journeys.

I’m expiring now and preparing for what’s next. thanks and thousand graces, to my husband, family, friends and colleagues for your trust and support. I literally couldn’t have done this without you.

If it’s your dream to write a book, I’m here to tell you not only can do it, but you should do it. Because if I can do it, so can you. Yes, it will be hard. Maybe harder than you can imagine. But, through the process, you will learn and grow so much. And, what you learn, you can pass on to others to improve lives.

And, if you’re like me, making life better is worth it.

Now I return to writing my letters to the editor and sending out our 30Seconds newsletters. I missed these touchpoints with our community and look forward to reconnecting with you all.

One final note for now: please forgive our 30Seconds “growing pains” – the last time we sent out our newsletter there was so much traffic on the website that it literally crashed the servers! We hope you will support us as we continue to adapt and pivot in response to the incredible growth we are experiencing. We really appreciate you being part of our thriving community!
