‘Real Time’ host Bill Maher had a tense exchange with Puck News correspondent Julia Ioffe after claiming that Trump supporters “have a lot to repent for.”

During the “Overtime” segment where viewers’ questions are answered after the broadcast on YouTube, Maher complained about the political polarization that has taken place across the country in recent years and the fact that he does not want not have to “choose sides” since he finds things nasty with both parties.

Presidential historian and Biden speechwriter Jon Meacham explained that he was “friends” with many Republicans in his home state of Tennessee who dislike former President Trump and how ” they want forgiveness but they don’t want to repent”.

“I don’t apologize for s—,” country music legend Trace Adkins reacted, sparking laughter from the audience. “It’s not personal, it’s political.”

Ioffe, however, pushed back.

“It’s personal. I think Trump made a lot of things personal,” Ioffe said. “And when you talk about the division in this country, you can’t talk about it like it’s a weather phenomenon that just happened, right? There were some things that were done by certain people in certain institutions, including Trump – very consciously, to divide this country, to attack the cracks that already existed and to make them wider and wider and wider to the point where we can no longer see ourselves through them .”

“So it’s not just like, ‘Oh my God, it happened.’ This was done on purpose by Trump in many ways…and so when we say it’s not personal, it’s personal. And I think the people who supported Trump and enabled Trump have something to which to apologize and have plenty of reasons to repent,” she continued.

“A man who calls countries bullshit countries, who tells congressmen to go back where they came from, who calls women pigs, who makes fun of their menstrual cycles, I could go on and on and on and on… And that people still follow it and think it’s still okay… That’s something we need to talk about,” she said.

“I would say most people I know who voted for Trump say, ‘The biggest mistake liberals make is thinking I like him,'” Maher replied.

“It doesn’t matter,” interrupted Ioffe. “If you vote for him -“

“What they’re saying is you have two choices in this country, I would never vote for Donald Trump, no one has been harder on Donald Trump than me… but that’s a bit more nuanced than that. It’s a little more nuanced than that. I understand why the people who make the decision to vote, which most people do, aren’t based on who I like the most but who I hate the most. less,” Maher said.

Ioffe pushed back: “It means all the things he’s said and done aren’t bad enough to stop you from voting for him, which means you’re more okay with him being in power. and that he has the nuclear codes and that he has control of the military and the Department of Justice… that means you’re ok with that or you’re more ok with that than the other guy, no matter what he said, no matter what he did.

“That means all of these things weren’t bad enough,” the Puck News founding partner later added.

“It depends on your priority,” Maher said. “For me, the two biggest issues are democracy and the environment… but I don’t have children. I know people who say, ‘I have children and I don’t like it when they come home and say ‘Uh, they divided the class today into oppressors and oppressed. And if I change my gender, I don’t have to tell my parents. There’s stuff like that that make people say, “You know, I agree. Donald Trump is a bad guy. He’s got everything wrong with one man. But I have these other considerations. “That’s all.”

He told Ioffe: “And that’s why you, you know, you seem to have such disregard for half the country. I don’t think that’s going to get us where we need to go because… I think we’ve crossed that line And now the question is, how can we go back How can we go back since I hate you so much I can’t live with you And we have to live with each other There’s no flat we can put the tape in. We have to find a way.
