Why the Declaration of Independence is Compelling?

What does Freedom means? What does freedom means to everyone? In the Declaration of Independence the United States got free from Great Britain. All men are equal and that everyone has their basic human rights. The Declaration of Independence is the most compelling for Americans today because it gave hope to everyone to be free, it made America what it is today, and gave us basic human rights that all men are created equally.

Americans think about the Declaration of Independence as giving them the freedom to do something.

As long as it’s under control and doing the right things. Americans have the right to be happy, free, and have their own life. “Life. Our very existence. Liberty. You can’t take my freedom away. The pursuit of happiness. To live the way we want to live, to do the work we want to do, to marry whom we want to marry; to have kids, accumulate property, and be prosperous” (National Review). It’s the Americans right to do what they want to do. “Deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed; that whenever any form of government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the right of the people to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new government” (Thomas Jefferson pp.18-19).

If it wasn’t for the Declaration of Independence America wouldn’t be what is known today as the United States of America. Especially if Thomas Jefferson didn’t come up with the Declaration of Independence. It all started out with the British having control over colonies and didn’t let them do what they wanted to do. The British began to pass laws that nobody liked. “He has refused his assent to laws the most wholesome and necessary for the public goods. He has refused for a long time, after such dissolutions, to cause others to be elected” (Thomas Jefferson p.19). It was getting out of control that everyone didn’t like the British. The American soon came up with a new government and it was called the Continental Congress. “Thomas Jefferson was chosen to be the head of this committee. Jefferson wrote a paper that became known as the Declaration of Independence” (The Cotton Gin). After all it was Thomas Jefferson who wrote the Declaration of Independence declaring freedom and that changed the nation.

The Declaration of Independence gave us basic human rights that all men are created equally and no one is more powerful than another person. Everyone doesn’t have the right to tell someone to do something but they have the right to believe, like, and speak. Some People believed different rights, that a human have. Example from the article “Examples of Human Rights” said “The right to reproductive freedom including the right to choose abortion. The right to be free from discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation, including the right to marry a person of the same sex” (YourDictionary). Also “Everyone has human rights even if legislation doesn’t protect them or if oppressive governments do not respect them” (YourDictionary). In other words no one can take away our natural rights because we are borned with those rights.

In conclusion the Declaration of Independence is the most compelling for Americans today because it gave hope to everyone to be free, it made America what it is today, and gave us basic human rights that all men are created equally.
